Program Overview
The ‘Comparative study of Peace, Conflict and Religion’ program is an exciting opportunity for you to examine the vitally important question of the role of religion and culture in contemporary world affairs. Add in the fact that the course takes place in one of Europe's most beautiful and historical cities, Rome, and you have a recipe for a truly unique experience.

Over the course of four dynamic weeks you will take two academic courses with students from around the world:

• Comparative Study of Peace, Conflict and Religion
• Cross-cultural Leadership

The Academic Courses

“Comparative Study of Peace, Conflict, and Religion” places a special focus on the comparative assessment of religion's impact both on conflict creation and conflict resolution. It addresses questions such as:
- In what ways has religious faith engendered economic, political, and military conflict?; and,
- In what ways has religion served a peace-making function in contemporary social and political affairs?
We live, as one noted commentator remarks, in a world awash with the claims of religious truth. The course will assess in an objective manner, free both from proselytizing and from a presumptive cynicism about religious faith, these critically important questions for our global community.

“Cross-Cultural Leadership” is about leading in a dynamic 21st century world. It is designed to help you understand the relationship between culture, globalisation, and leadership. What is culture? How does culture influence our behaviour and decisions as leaders and followers? Is culture a source of conflict in today's world? What is globalisation? What are the potential conflicts between culture and globalisation? You will discover how we are shaped by culture and globalisation and how we can, in turn, contribute to this ever-changing world.

Each course is worth 6 ECTS (European credits) and is transcripted by Charles University and is run in conjunction with Leadership exCHANGE.

Over the four weeks you will gain invaluable skills and knowledge. In particular, you will:

• Explore the main religions
• Think critically about how religion impacts international affairs
• Create a network of leaders
• Meet people from around the world
• Broaden knowledge about spanerse cultures
• Develop public speaking and analytical thinking skills

Rome is a vibrant city filled with history and is a perfect location for the program. In the afternoons, you will go on cultural tours and site visits, such as the Vatican, and also have guest lecturers from leaders in the field of religion and leadership. There will also be some free-time to explore the city on your own or with your new friends from around the world.

Accommodation

Accommodation is included in the program fee and will be in double or triple occupancy dorm rooms in the city centre, minutes from the Vatican. You will have the choice to cook in kitchens in the dorm or to eat at the numerous cafes and restaurants in the city. Rome has a public transportation system consisting of buses, trams, and metros.

Testimonials
"The superb teaching style and interesting content made the course worthwhile....[it] was well structured and Joseph's teaching style was entertaining, interactive and very informative...The diversity of the students was a highlight, as we were able to learn about each-others' countries."
Mark Aburrow, University of Canberra

"I loved the experience and meeting great people from around the world. This experience has really opened my eyes up to study overseas in the future."
Kathryn Carroll, Griffith University

"We had an amazing lecturer who made studying history and religion so much fun. If we think about some of the pivotal global issues of recent times (such as the rise of terrorism) it is immediately apparent how inter-linked and interdependent countries are in the modern world. The International Security in the Modern World will analyse some of the world’s most pressing security issues, with a particular emphasis on Eastern Europe’s place in the middle of these issues.
This intensive and dynamic course will involve academic classes, active group work, guest presentations and visits and is ideal for students studying international relations, politics, security studies or policing, criminal studies, Global Relations, history or international law.
The Course
Over the course of recent history one of the world’s key regions in relation to security has been Central and Eastern Europe. This region was one of the most unstable throughout the 20th Century and has seen some of the most testing conflicts of history: the World Wars began here, the Cold War was played out across its States and modern conflicts in the Western Balkans and Caucasus have taken place on its doorstep. Taught in the Czech Republic, the program is ideally located for students to be able to gain a regional perspective on both the historical and modern aspects of international security.
The program covers three main topics:
•	Energy security
•	Terrorism, nationalism and ethnic conflicts
•	Transnational crime
The course is fully taught in English and has been designed to count as a regular, semester-length course at an Australian university.

The Location
The program is ideally located at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. Masaryk University is an excellent university ideally located at the cross-roads of Europe: Vienna, Prague, Budapest and many other destinations are just a few hours away.
Brno is a brilliant little city: full of charm and character-filled streets. Transport is easy, meals inexpensive and summer in this city is a unique experience for both first time or seasoned travellers.
Read an interview with Matt Shirley who participated in July 2011

Testimonials
“It was an absolutely amazing experience! The domain, which offers a magnificent view over the city centre, is located just a 10 minute walk from the lively Place Plumereau, a popular place where to meet friends for a coffee or a meal.

Field-trips and cultural activities
As part of the program you take part in a French cooking class, be taken on visits of the city of Tours, the Clos Luce (Leonardo da Vinci’s home), the Chenonceau Castle, a French winery etc.

Testimonials
“The teachers on the course had such diverse backgrounds. The courses within the program were relevant to my studies, covering a range of business and communication focuses. The school was accommodating and helped when they could. It was a wonderful way to spend summer meeting new people, learning and absorbing new information. It's a great time to reflect on life in Australia and what international opportunities are available for study and work overseas in the future!”
Tiffany Hart, University of Canberra

“We were taught in a practical way, basically preparing us for working for a firm in the future. This is something I will never ever forget in my life – I got to learn something new that I had never come across before in Australia. Overall, the mixture of theoretical and practical was great.”
Karandeep Narula, University of Canberra

“It was really interesting - the “game” we played in European marketing was unlike anything I have done in Australia and I learnt more in that week of class than I have in a whole semester of marketing subjects. The presentation skills we learnt in Global Leadership have been interesting to use in presentations I have done since coming home.”
Sophie Chivas, Griffith University

Read an interview with Karandeep Narula (KD) who participated in July 2011
APPLY NOW

Program Overview
The environment, by nature, knows no boundaries. While environmental law originally focused on local problems like local air and noise pollution, today we are confronted with severe trans-boundary and global environmental problems like the continuing loss of biodiversity, long-distance air-pollution, and the threat of climate change. This dynamic course on International Environmental Law will tackle core subjects related to the supra-nationalisation of environmental law.
The course will be structured around the following themes:
•	international environmental rule-making, including compliance and enforcement
•	international environmental principles
• human rights and environmental protection
• international and EU climate law, including the choice of the right regulatory instruments to steer citizen & business behaviour.
Over 3 intensive weeks, you will attend 36 hours of classes on a range of topics related to International Environmental Law. Alongside the academic classes are a range of field trips to relevant organisations. This might include: the International Court of Justice, European Commission and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (TBC).
Based in the beautiful city of Maastricht in the Netherlands, the program is ideally located to give students not only access to a world class university, but also to all of the cultural diversity of this fantastic corner of Europe: Belgium, France and Germany are all within easy striking distance.

Register your interest for 2013
Places are allocated on a first-come, first served basis so apply early.

What past participants said about their AIM Overseas experience:
"Studying overseas is a first for me, and with the experience I had, I hope it won't be the last. Because AIM Overseas gets together a group for (a) program, I was able to meet friendly and like-minded Australians. The most rewarding part was not only the study and cultural experience I had, but it was sharing those experiences with the friends that I made over there."
Trang Van Phan, Adelaide University
How to Apply and Frequently Asked Questions
When we think about doing business in a global context, it is impossible to ignore the importance of the US’s influence.
The ‘Business in the USA’ is essential for anyone who intends to work in an international context - whether you intend to work for a global company, a company that does business with the USA, or indeed work in the USA itself.
Over the course of 3 weeks and 36 hours of lectures and seminars, you will get a unique insight into US business issues and culture.
Topics are expected to include:
•	The Future of American business
•	Causes and consequences of the Global Financial Crisis
•	Building relationships and networking in the USA
•	Understanding leadership in American Organisations
•	Venture capital, banking and finance

Business Communication for Meetings and Negotiations
It’s one thing to hear about business issues and culture and it’s another thing altogether to find out about it hands-on. One of the most exciting aspects of the program is the section on business communication for meetings and negotiations. In this part of the course, not only will you learn the theory about how to conduct meetings, interviews and negotiations in a US context, but you’ll learn and practice real-world skills. To top it off, you’ll be visiting a range of businesses to put your new skills to the test.
This is genuinely stepping out of the classroom and into the ‘Real World’.

About the city of Charlotte
Charlotte, North Carolina, offers the excitement of a cosmopolitan city and the ease of Southern charm, giving it a unique atmosphere. It is one of the financial capitals of the US and home to many of the country’s largest financial institutions. This is where business happens!
Nicknamed the “Queen City”, Charlotte is named in honour of the German princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg who had become Queen Consort of British King George III, the year before the city’s founding.
In 2008, Charlotte was chosen the "Best Place to Live in America" by relocate-america.com in its annual ranking and 8 of the 100 "Best Places to Live and Launch" by CNNMoney.com for cities picked for their vibrant lifestyles and opportunities for new businesses.
The University of North Carolina, Charlotte is a dynamic university that is going places. You are stepping into one of the fastest growing universities in the country!
Accommodation
Students are accommodated at the Hampton Inn, just across the road from the university. With plenty of facilities and eating options nearby, you and the rest of the group will be blown away by the outstanding hospitality of the team there.

Register your interest for 2013
Places are strictly limited and eligible students will be allocated a place on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, I also have an excellent understanding of where Australia’s system sits in relation to this.
The program also gave me access to organisations which require this kind of knowledge during our field trips, a cultural understanding of why the system is the way it is, and connections with people who work in the system with a class small enough that we could ask personal interest questions.
The lecturers and Martin really went out of their way to make sure we were going the right places and experiencing the most we possibly could.”
Emma Riggs

Read more testimonials from past participants
Register your interest for 2013
Places are limited and eligible students will be allocated a place on a first-come, first-served basis.
How to Apply and Frequently Asked Questions

The program explores the development and maintenance of the Mexican health system in the context of how developing countries manage their health systems.
The program also looks at community health – the university has excellent linkages with community organisations working in some of the poorer areas of Mexico City. This allows participants to get a feel for the ‘front line’ of dealing with health issues in a developing country.
La Salle University never fail to deliver beautiful courses and fantastic service for students and this program is no different. The course includes 36 hours of lectures and seminars, 30 hours of presentations and site visits, an extensive number of cultural activities and much more.
While Mexico has an excellent private health care system that sees many North Americans traveling there (as prices are considerably lower in Mexico), its public hospitals remain underfunded and lack equipment and resources.
Over the last 10 years Mexico health system has undergone a thorough reform to improve its performance and the health of Mexicans has experienced marked progress.
Mexico is a great location to examine the strengths and weaknesses of a health system in terms of access to health care, quality of care, efficient supply of services and the financial sustainability of the system.

Click here to read a testimonial about the Public Health in Mexico program
Click here to see the 2011 program’s video about their experience
Register your interest for 2013
Places are limited and eligible students will be allocated a place on a first-come, first-served basis.
How to Apply and Frequently Asked Questions

There are plenty of opportunities to go exploring on your own in your free time, as well as go on planned excursions to cities outside of the campus location.
I was a complete beginner, had no Spanish under my belt, so I was put into a class with another student who was a complete beginner. I am amazed at how much content we got through in 3 and a half weeks!
I found all of us girls who took the AimOverseas program really bonded because we were all so eager to experience as much of the Mexican culture as possible, and by showing our interest the La Salle coordinators offered to take us to other cities and just answer any queries we had regarding their culture and history. (...) The Mexican people themselves as a culture are so beautiful. The people we met were so generous, friendly, and eager to make our experience of their country as positive as possible. (...) I have made friends with many locals in Mexico City and plan to visit them again in the near future!".
* The 2012 program and inclusions may vary from the 2011 itinerary.
Read another testimonial about Spanish in Mexico
Register your interest for Jan 2013
Places are limited and eligible students will be allocated a place on a first-come, first-served basis.
How to Apply and Frequently Asked Questions

The course, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will give participants detailed insight into teaching theory and practice in the USA today as well as an opportunity to observe classroom teaching in practice.
The dynamic city of Charlotte, close to the East Coast, serves as a stunning backdrop for this program that will include lectures and seminars, site visits and classroom time in a US school. Aside from looking at teaching practices in the USA, the program will also address the hot issues in US education today, and include sessions on urban education, special needs students, diversity in the classroom, assessment and the use of technology.
This program is one not to be missed by teaching students. As it takes place during the Australian summer holidays there will also be ample opportunity for students to travel around the USA either before or after the program.
Charlotte, North Carolina, offers the excitement of a cosmopolitan city and the ease of Southern charm, giving it a unique atmosphere.
“It was the most invaluable experience that I have ever encountered. It has enriched both my personal and professional future.” Debbie Luckett
Read other testimonials from past participants
Read more about how the Teacher Education program affected past participants
Register your interest for 2013
Places are limited and eligible students will be allocated a place on a first-come, first-served basis.
How to Apply and Frequently Asked Questions

This program has been several years in the making!
Over 3 weeks, and 36 hours of classes, this program is intended to familiarise you with the concepts and ideas of positive psychology. Through lectures, interactive meetings, group discussions and practical workshops, it will provide you with in depth knowledge on selected topics within the field of positive psychology and give students hands on experience with some of the positive psychology intervention techniques.

About Positive Psychology
The Positive psychology was introduced by Martin Seligman around 2000 and can be viewed as a supplementary approach to clinical psychology. The positive psychological movement formulated three aims: (1) to focus on well-being and happiness instead of abnormal behaviour and psychopathology, (2) to be concerned with building positive qualities and strengths instead of repairing damage and (3) to prevent future problems instead of correcting past and present problems.
Positive psychology is relevant to students of both psychology and organisational behaviour.

A Unique Study Opportunity
The Positive Psychology program at Maastricht is a unique international study opportunity for Australian psychology students. Maastricht’s psychology faculty is world-renowned, and with access to Positive Psychology courses currently limited in Australia, you will experience not only world-class instruction but get insight into what is internationally a truly ‘hot topic’.

An All-Round Experience
The program includes a wide range of cultural activities and field trips designed to give you a real taste of the Netherlands, Dutch culture and Europe. You’ll stay with other participants in university accommodation and take classes at Maastricht throughout the week. On the weekends you’ll travel with the group to nearby cities like Brussels, Bruges or Amsterdam. Be early to apply, this program is expected to fill very quickly!

Apply Now!
Places are limited and eligible students will be allocated a place on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to Apply and Frequently Asked Questions

Program Overview
This International Relations and Politics in the European Union program is taught in English and run by AIM Overseas’ partner in the Netherlands, Maastricht University’s Center for European Studies (www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/ces).
Located in the southernmost part of the Netherlands, within walking distance of Belgium and cycling distance of Germany, Maastricht has developed a very hybrid culture throughout is history and now is a symbol of pan-European identity.
The course takes full advantage of the location and is a great mix of lectures, sites visits and fieldtrips making for a very dynamic program.
Over 3 intensive weeks, you will attend 39 hours of classes where you will take an in-depth look at the legal and political landscape of the EU and learn about the issues relating to international relations and human rights.
You will also visit places such as the International Court of Justice in The Hague or the European Parliament in Brussels.

Accommodation
The host university’s accommodation has a mix of single and shared rooms. Both options share communal kitchens and other facilities. There is a small cost difference between the shared and single options - students will be offered a choice on a first-come, first-served basis.

What past participants said about the course:
”This was my first trip overseas and I had the time of my life. Living as an international student and experiencing the Dutch culture in an old European town was fantastic. We created great networks and friendships that I hope will last for a long time. AIM could not have designed a better overseas program. ” - Jacqueline Rimington, Uni of Newcastle

Read a detailed testimonial about the course
Apply Now
Places are limited and eligible students will be allocated a place on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to Apply and Frequently Asked Questions
